Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program

About Us

The Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program features a multidisciplinary team of highly qualified, caring medical professionals. It is directed by a physician who is board certified in pediatric nephrology (the study of the kidneys), and includes nurses who are certified and experienced in pediatric kidney dialysis. Our staff works closely with your child’s other physicians to coordinate treatment plans and monitor all aspects of your child’s health.

Unlike some dialysis centers, which serve both children and adults, our pediatric-only dialysis center is geared specifically to the pediatric population. Dialysis, a life-sustaining procedure, requires a team approach, with participation of both family members and medical team. Our patients are monitored for adequacy of treatments, nutrition, bone health, anemia, growth, and, more importantly, are referred for transplantation very early. Our pediatric dialysis social workers and child life specialists help integrate the children in school and are instrumental in the psychological well-being of both patients and their families.

Treating the Whole Child

Living with kidney disease can be very challenging. Both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are time consuming and present changes in activities, diet and other aspects of daily life.
In addition to advanced medical services, the Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program provides essential emotional support. A child-friendly environment, including televisions, games and other activities, helps keep little ones entertained during lengthy dialysis treatment. In addition, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital makes available a Broward County Public Schools teacher to assist children who have had extended school absences.
All of the services provided by the Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program are further supported by the patient- and family-centered care philosophy of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This recognizes the family as the greatest influence over a child’s health and well-being, and encourages a mutually beneficial partnership between families and healthcare professionals in caring for children.
