Our dedicated pediatric Hematology & Oncology physicians see patients under 18 with sickle cell anemia for routine visits in their office at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. For pain crisis or emergent issues, they go to the pediatric ER. For chronic transfusion, patients are seen in the outpatient unit on the 4th floor.

We understand the unique challenges faced by families managing this condition and offer specialized services to support your child's health and well-being.

About Sickle Cell Anemia

Although anyone can inherit the condition, sickle cell anemia occurs most often in African Americans and Hispanic Americans. People with the condition may experience sickle cell crises where irregular, or “sickled,” red blood cells block small blood vessels and stop the regular flow of blood and oxygen, causing severe pain throughout the body.

Routine Care

Your child will receive regular check-ups with our experienced specialists in a comfortable, child-friendly environment. These important visits help us monitor your child's health, adjust treatments as needed, and prevent complications.

Emergency Care

If your child experiences a pain crisis or other urgent sickle cell-related issue, our pediatric Emergency Department is equipped with specialized protocols to provide prompt, effective relief. Our emergency team works closely with sickle cell specialists to ensure your child receives appropriate care during these difficult episodes.

Transfusion Services

Children requiring chronic transfusion therapy receive treatment in our specialized outpatient unit located on the 4th floor. This dedicated space is designed to make these regular treatments as comfortable as possible, with child-friendly amenities and a caring staff familiar with your child's specific needs.
